Print Tip of the Day

A

bove all else remember this is your final proof. It is a representation of the printers understanding of specifications for all aspects of your project. Do not hesitate to question anything that looks incorrect. If there are numerous corrections request an additional final proof.

Copy:

1. Are there any spelling errors?
2. Check the final proof against your last set of proofs to ensure the final corrections were made.
3. Are there any missing characters, or broken type?
4. Are the company names, numbers, addresses, correct?
5. Are the page numbers on the content pages correct to the story pages?
6. Is the type on the spine in the correct location?
7. Are all of the fonts correct?

Size:

1. Are the flat and folded sizes correct?
2. Are the scans sized and cropped correctly?

Folding:

1. Are all the pages in the correct order?
2. Do the folios back each other up correctly and appear in the correct position from page to page?
3. Do all the cross-overs line up?

Color Breaks:

1. Is all copy in the correct color?
2. Do all the images trap, or does any paper show where two colors should touch?
3. Are all images that require special finishing shown, such as perforation lines, embossing etc.?
4. Are all screens in the correct position?
5. Are all bleeds the correct amount?
6. Have all reverses been made?

Binding:

1. If perfect-bound is the spine the correct thickness?
2. If perfect bound is the gutter wide enough to accommodate the amount of space lost in binding?
3. Are samples or bluelines of cards or envelopes that will be bound into the publication included?
4. Are any necessary holes drilled or marked and in the correct size and position?

Artwork:

1. Are there any upside-down or flopped images?
2. Does each image have it's proper caption?
3. Has all background been removed from any silhouettes?
4. Are the edges of silhouettes smooth?

Finishing:

1. Is the proper finishing technique indicated for each of the images?
2. Is any image that is not supposed to print marked “FPO–Does Not Print”?

Additionally:

1. Circle all the dust spots.
2. Check the crop marks, trim guides and registration marks are not in the image area.
